How do we keep H.323 videoconferencing fresh and relevant in a world of
Skype and other webcam applications? My answer to those inquiring about
the difference between the two is that Skype is great for one-one-one
conversations, but is not great for videoconferences that are
incorporating SMART Boards, document cameras and Power Points. I'd love
to hear what others think about the growing use of desktop
videoconferencing (in classrooms).
Several webcam apps do work incorporate wide angle digital cameras, smart technologies, and ppts, etc, as well as file sharing. I think the video conferencing community will have to adapt to this new user in two ways. First, more affordable and second, include collaborative opps. I would love to see providers be proactive as collaborator creators. If two teachers ask for the same program at about the same time, let the two know about each other. AISD does both H323 and iChat. iChat has been teacher to teacher, teacher to national parks and a few university programs, but now providers are attending content conferences and teachers are requesting sessions via iChat/ These new sessions require me to rethink funding, managing the impact on district bandwidth and curriculum alignment.
